Threesome will run from 4 November until 2 December 2018 at The Gallery, Liverpool
Open Tuesday to Sunday 12 – 4pm
Presented by DuoVision as part of Homotopia Festival 2018

Threesome is an exhibition of personal responses to the female gaze by three renowned contemporary lesbian painters. Sadie Lee, Roxana Halls and Sarah Jane Moon have painted themselves, each other and the cult cabaret performer Ursula Martinez in an exhibition curated by art writer and editor Anna McNay. They have also each created new work of a yet-to-be-revealed subject specifically for Threesome’s Liverpool debut.

A full-colour catalogue of the exhibition will also be available for the first time at Threesome in Liverpool, along with prints of the portraits.

Sadie Lee, Roxana Halls and Sarah Jane Moon are figurative artists, each with a distinctive and unique style, whose queer identities inform much of their work. They produce paintings which deploy the tropes and techniques of representational art to striking effect. Notions of queerness undoubtedly signify to each but in an era where artists routinely insist on their subversiveness, and the interrogation of sexual and gender norms is a mainstream endeavour, this group invites aesthetic as well as ideological scrutiny. These painters engage with the theme of sexuality in singular and compelling ways and offer arresting interpretations of the female gaze.

These gay women make bold, alluring, witty and deft works, which disavow any antagonism between politics and pleasure, seeking to foreground the idea of the female gaze and to explore how they look at each other and themselves. The show’s title, ‘Threesome’, makes a coolly sardonic reference to the voyeuristic aspect of lesbian representation: any eroticism in these works is strictly intentional.

This exhibition follows on from the very successful seven-week run of the original Threesome exhibition at New Art Projects, London, in January 2018, where it was developed with Fred Mann and Tim Hutchinson, together with curator Anna McNay. Threesome is also supported by Homotopia, Duovision, Arts Council England and The Art Academy.

A Q&A with the artists and curator will take place on Sunday 4 November at 1pm. This will be held in conjunction with the launch of the show’s full-colour catalogue, designed and published by Jo Monroe.
